4 Easy Ways to Help a Senior Manage Medication

assisted living Plymouth
Is managing your medication becoming more important for assisted living in Plymouth? Are you finding your growing list of medications harder to keep track of? Need a simple solution to help a loved one manage medications in their senior years?

As we age, many of us find that managing medications is an essential part of our daily routine. Often if a senior person is not able to manage their medications, it could put their life at risk and limit their ability to live independently. Luckily the experts at Plymouth Terrace have 4 easy ways to help seniors manage medications.

1.     Organizers: pill organizers are an essential tool for anyone managing multiple medications. You can find an organizer that works with your schedule, or use several simple organizers if medications need to be taken at different times throughout the day.

2.     Everything in its place: over time, supplements and medications may have taken up residence in different places throughout a home. Get everything into one convenient place so refilling organizers is fast and easy.

3.     Use the phone: if the senior has and uses a smartphone, you can easily set up an app to help them remember to take their meds. For someone who is less technically inclined, you can help manage meds by making a phone call or two throughout the day.

4.     Make a list: write out simple instructions in large print to put up in the same place where medications are stored. Make the list more usable by using a color-coding system with colored dots on the meds and the list! Keep extra copies of the list for family and doctor visits.

You or your loved one don’t have to feel overwhelmed by an expanding list of medications anymore! Simply by practicing one or two of these items, you’ll find managing medications is much easier and assisted living in Plymouth is achievable! If you still have questions about managing your medications, give the experts at Plymouth Terrace Senior Living a call today. (734) 545-4639

Why is Sleep so Important as We Age?

assisted living Plymouth

Are you battling insomnia?

Are you having a hard time getting a good night’s rest?

It’s important to make sleep a priority because it improves your overall well-being:

Lower risk for diseases: Getting more sleep can lower your risk for diabetes and heart disease.

Boost your immune system: More sleep can help your body fight off viruses and infections.

More self-control:  You’re more likely to make unhealthy lifestyle choices when you’re sleep-deprived. Finding motivation to exercise when you’re tired can be tough, but when you’re well-rested, you may feel more energized to get that work out, walk, or yoga session in.

Refresh your mind and body: Sleep gives your mind and body an opportunity to rest and restore. This can help minimize inflammation, regulate your digestive system, and allow your brain to recharge.

Increased energy:  Getting enough sleep will give you more energy. It helps you stay active and engaged with life, which helps give you a positive outlook and good mood boost!

Learn more about why getting a good night’s sleep is so important here.

Recognizing Symptoms of Mental Illness in Seniors

assisted living Plymouth

As loved ones age, we can’t help but notice changes in them. They may move a bit more carefully or react a bit more slowly. Often the changes are physical and happen slowly and naturally. But what if we start to notice personality changes? What types of behavioral changes are normal? Which ones might be a sign of something worrisome?

These are the types of questions our clients and their families grapple with every day. It’s difficult to know what changes are a natural byproduct of aging and which might be symptoms of mental illness or dementia. Many people associate the onset of mental illness with adolescence or young adulthood. The exception to this is dementia. Early stages of dementia and early stages of other mental illness may bear similar symptoms, and because of this disparity, non-dementia mental illness may be misdiagnosed in seniors.

Addressing 5 Common Assisted Living Myths

Assisted Living Plymouth

Myth #1: I have to sacrifice my independence.

Fact: Retirement community living actually promotes independence by having the support of caregivers available if needed.

Myth #2: Assisted Living is too expensive.

Fact: While the price tag may seem high for assisted living, when you add up expenses for older adults, you’ll discover that the cost price is comparable and sometimes cheaper than maintaining your home as well as all your other expenses for the month (i.e. utilities, insurance, property tax, routine maintenance, repairs, lawn care, transportation and groceries).

Myth #3: Assisted living communities are depressing.

Fact: Assisted living communities are vibrant, attractive places to live. Many studies show that a seniors’ quality of life improves after moving to assisted living. A wide range of amenities and services make life easier and add excitement back into their lifestyle.

Myth # 4: Family should care for their elders at home.

Fact: Caregiving can strengthen or weaken your relationship with your loved one, bring added stress, and may cause negative health effects. Choosing assisted living could lead to a happier more enjoyable life for both of you!

Myth #5: Assisted Living is just another way to say nursing home.

Fact: Nursing homes and assisted living centers are often thought of as the same, however, their care options are much different. Nursing homes focus primarily on medical care, while assisted living centers focus not only on medical care but on well-being and comfort too.
